I want to take a moment and address something I’ve been seeing in our hobby. I’ve seen plenty of arguments both online and in person about the less expensive HT and mobile rigs put out by Chinese manufacturers.
My first radio was a Baofeng UV5RA and it saw me through four ARES events (including Hurricane Matthew). I upgraded recently to the UV82HP which I just used during the Hurricane Irma Activation after my Yaseu FT-8900R bit the dust during a power surge.(Yes even the big three can’t escape power surges).
These inexpensive radios if programmed correctly will stay within the bands programmed and they are a great little radio for emergencies and for the new amateur radio operator just getting started. Give people a break. Don’t talk down to them about their rig choices, not everyone can afford the big three. Teach people the hobby not nastiness. Just my two cents.
I will be the radio operator at one of the shelters here in Brevard County during Hurricane Irma. Tomorrow I will packing last minute things and then Friday I will do a double check of my go bag. I will do my best to keep ya’ll informed. Prayers are appreciated.
